Hooray, I've joined a yearlong writing challenge!
Get Your Words Out [GYWO] is in it’s 17th year, apparently. It’s a year long writing challenge with several pledge levels, and I’ve signed up :D
I’ll be attempting a habit pledge of having 120 writing sessions in the year. I’ve already had an ongoing goal of writing once a week, so this is adding about a second day onto my goal.
I’m quite nervous about making a solid goal for the year. It’s one thing to say “I want to write once a week”. It’s another thing to say “I’m going to try and write all year”.
Part of meeting this goal is possibly going to include looking at what I’ve been working on. Not with the goal of forcing myself to dedicate my time to only one project—I’d just rebel and panic—but to get a better idea of where my attention has been at and understand the scope. I have a nasty habit of dedicating myself to a lot of things at once and then treating myself as if I’m not doing ‘enough’, when the reality is I’ve got a lot of creative things happening alongside
life.
Ongoing projects & pieces
Bad times AU, Part 1: OC/Canon Baldur’s Gate 3. Set before and during the events of the game, no Tav. Titled ‘Bad Times AU’ because no one has a good time. A slowburn, to the point that ~feelings~ don’t happen until the follow-up story, lol.
Worse times AU: OC/Canon, Baldur’s Gate 3. A cousin to ‘Bad Times AU’, this handles an Ascendant ending Astarion and a version of my Tav and Dark Urge whose lives have gone dramatically different than their in-game canons.
Felkeys AU: OC/Canon, Destiny 2. This is a fic I started working on 4 years ago, shelved for 2 years, and returned to this year. I don’t play Destiny 2 anymore. I was tired of being haunted by this project and decided I would finish it with the outline I’d created in the past. I’ve gotten 2 chapters drafted, and then realized I wanted to rework the entire middle. Whoopsie.
Fraternization: OC/Canon, Bloodborne. It’s porn with very little plot.
Breezeblocks: Artemy/Daniil, Pathologic 2. A sad scene between Artemy and Daniil, based upon a wondrous animatic.
And so, so much more.
As we can see, there’s a lot going on. And an obvious trend in what I tend to write [not sorry; I love my OCs]. These are projects I’m counting as ‘actively working on’, because I have a lot of things that simmer in the background. In fact, the stovetop is overfull of pots, and some of them are boiling over. It’s an aspect of how I don’t focus on one thing for long, and hop from concept to concept, following my interests.
I feel pretty overwhelmed by all the ideas I have, honestly. Creating OCs and story crafting is of great interest to me, and it’s something I naturally do for a lot of media I engage with. Part of pledging to GYWO is to encourage myself to actively and mindfully engage with my writing this year. I say writing brings me joy, so I might as well do some, lmao.
I’m going to continue with my writing check-ins, try to keep up with the writing communities I’ve joined, and keep trying out the weekly creative goals thing. I’m not holding those weekly goals/focus to JUST writing; I have too many hobbies and things I want to do for that.
It’s very odd feeling to discuss my writing life this, and I think so far I’m greatly enjoying writing these posts.
